Panic Attacks

A panic attack is a sudden surge of overwhelming anxiety and fear. Your heart pounds and you cannot breathe. You may feel dizzy and sick to your stomach. You may even feel like you are dying or going crazy. Without treatment, panic attacks may lead to a more pervasive panic disorder. They may even cause you to withdraw from normal familial, social and occupational activities. Panic attacks can occur unexpectedly as a one-time occurrence or in repetitive episodes.

Panic attack symptoms include:

  • Intense fear and/or discomfort
  • Pounding heart
  • Choking sensations
  • Fear of losing control
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal distress
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Trembling/shaking
  • Sweating
